Clarissa Skinner

I am a lively tour guide who aims to ensure that as well as being informative my tours are enjoyable and fun for my groups, whether they be big student groups or smaller family ones.

I have a background in touring theatre, including English Speaking theatre for foreigners, which means I am good with people whose native tongue isn't English. I have also travelled extensively, and have a great interest in people from different backgrounds and cultures. I have studied Japanese to a very basic level spending 9 months in Japan.

In the past I have worked for the Royal Collection giving guided tours of Clarence House and the Royal Mews and have gained an insight into the Royal residences and art works in the collection. I was a guide in the Houses of Parliament; and also currently do a lot of corporate work for the British Museum on their exhibitions, which has greatly expanded my interest and knowledge of this site. Both of which I find hugely satisfying.

I love guiding at the National Gallery and can combine this with my Mayfair walking tour. I have also got a good repertoire of walking tours, including an excellent Jack the Ripper tour. I also have an across the board interest in the arts and culture.

My Virtual Tours currently include Mayfair and Literary Chelsea.

COVID 19 - Please note that I will only be able to conduct tours within the current Government guidelines and regulations. I have done a risk assessment through Visit England and have been awarded the 'We're Good To Go' logo.

Halloween History: Attitudes to Sorcerers and Witches in the Elizabethan and Stuart Courts

To put it mildly, attitudes towards witches and sorcerers in the Elizabethan period were confusing and often contradictory. While Bloody Mary (reigned 1553 - 1558) was vicious in her treatment of witches, Elizabeth I (1558 - 1603) had a more ambivalent relationship to this subject. After all her mother, Anne Boleyn had been accused of being a witch because of a malformation of her left hand, which appeared in the form of an extra finger. Elizabeth, as a strong female ruler, may not have been happy about hunting down the fair sex, therefore, and accusing those who might be innocent of any crime.

The Dark Side of Chelsea in London

It is often stated that fact is stranger than fiction, and to prove the point, many literary figures have complicated and interesting stories themselves. Let’s explore some of them on a tour of London’s Chelsea neighbourhood.
