Mike Armitage

I was born in Islington, north London, living in London all my life until I moved to Windsor a few years ago. For most of my working life I was a Customs Officer at Heathrow airport, where I met many people from all over the world who were visiting London. I've also done the daily commute into London and had a spell working on behalf of the British Government in South Africa. I help to run the local Wildlife Watch group for 7-12 year olds, and have four teenage children of my own.

Your time in London is precious, so don't waste it - let me show you the celebrated sights ‚ St. Paul's Cathedral; the Tower of London; Buckingham Palace; Westminster Abbey; Hampton Court - and ensure you catch all the must-sees, but also the details that most visitors don't see, and the stories they don't hear‚ Why are the galleries and museums in London world renowned - I'll make sure you see the highlights, but also some lesser known artefacts, with equally interesting stories to tell.

Kensington Palace, the lesser known Royal Palace tucked away to the west of Hyde Park.

And best of all; London's hidden surprises ‚ remains of mediaeval palaces; inns from the times of Dickens; overlooked secrets of buildings and yards.

And of course there's Windsor, where I now live. It boasts the largest inhabited castle in the world, which is also the Queen's weekend home and burial place of ten British monarchs. There's the Great Park with thousand year old oak trees; Eton College; the peaceful River Thames, complete with swans and brightly decorated old canal boats, so different from the Thames downstream in London.

If there's anything that are particularly interests you, let me know. I look forward to welcoming you to this great world city and showing you what YOU want to see.

Guided walks around London ‚ either a broad overture to London or something tailor-made to YOUR requirements. You'll see the celebrated sites from a different perspective, and also discover London's hidden secrets; it's unseen alleyways and passages; the unknown nooks and crannies, and hear the stories behind them‚

First World War walks. Westminster; memorials or Windsor, I have a walk for you, your group or school. Why not follow the route of a Zeppelin raid on London in 1915.

Americans in London in World War II. Where were the clubs and meeting places for the soldiers? Where were the US military and political hubs? Where did Glenn Miller give concerts? Where did Ed Murrow broadcast from? I can show you this and even some graffiti carved by a bored American GI on sentry duty in 1944.

The Blitz. - The dark days from Sept 1940 to May 1941 and once more in 1944 with the onset of the V1 and V2s. I can present the faded evidence of the bombs, as well as the tales of heroism from a time when London looked its worst, but the people were at their best. We can explore this at the Churchill War Rooms, or on a guided walk. Try my Pimlico at war walk - a relatively unknown corner of London, centrally placed, with plenty of reminders of two World Wars.

The Olympics came to London in 2012 - I have a 2012 guiding accreditation and I'll show you the Olympic Park area, and explain the Olympic legacy as well as the history of a neglected part of London.

The Imperial War Museum  - telling the story of Britain's conflicts since 1914. A wonderful museum that not only showcases military hardware, but also has many displays of the ordinary (and extraordinary) people of this and other countries.

And the great Government Ministries of State, London's War Memorials, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, National Gallery The Tower of London St. Pauls Cathedral

The wildlife in London - more surprising than you might think!
