Jessica Thomas
I have been guiding professionally in London for two years, but my love affair with this city goes back much further. I have lived here for over a decade, as well as stints in York, Edinburgh, Cambridge, and Spain.
I am particularly passionate about the stories that history books leave out: the ordinary Londoners who kept the city running during the Blitz, the women who shaped the war effort but rarely made the headlines, the Tudor prisoners in the Tower who scratched their names into the stone walls and hoped someone would eventually notice. On my WW2 tour, which takes in the Cabinet War Rooms, I try to give as much time to the women filing memos and monitoring telephone exchanges as I do to the man with the famous cigar.
I have visited over 70 UNESCO World Heritage Sites across Europe and beyond. Further afield I have a weakness for New York and Boston, and I have every intention of getting to Dollywood in Nashville next.
My background is in the History of Art — I studied at the University of York — and I spent time working in the art market, including a spell at Sotheby's in their Impressionist and Modern Art department.
Tours & Specialities
I offer a range of tours, from the iconic to the obscure:
Changing of the Guard & Royal London — including Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, St James's Palace, the Guards' Chapel and Guards' Museum within Wellington Barracks, two of the most overlooked gems on this route.
Westminster Walk — the Abbey, Big Ben, and fantastic river views and photos for clients.
Tales from WW2 incl. Cabinet War Rooms — the everyday Londoner and the women who kept the city alive.
The Story of the City: Romans to the Present Day — a walk from Tower Hill to St Paul's through two thousand years of history, scandal, plague, fire, and survival.
Famous & Quirky Museums — including the V&A, British Museum, National Maritime Museum, and more.
The Classic Sites — Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, British Museum, National Gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery.
A Few Things I Know About Unusually Well
Maritime History — especially Greenwich; six years of living there and an obsession with the Maritime Museum and the adventurous tales there are to tell.
Art History & the London Galleries — History of Art degree plus auction house experience means I can genuinely get excited about a Picasso and explain why you should too.
Film Locations — London is one big film set, get ready to explore!
Specialist Shopping — vintage clothing, jewellery, antiques. London does these things extraordinarily well, and I know exactly where to go.
Food, Coffee & Cocktails — I take these very seriously.
