Mark Godowski

Mark Godowski

Welcome to London; and I hope I’ll be the Londoner you choose, to show you round our city – its sites, traditions and cutting edge. An old-time Londoner with a youthful approach, I've got the energy and passion to make every visit an exploration. I tell stories - of heroes and villains, immigrants and adventurers, artefacts and monstrosities; I’ll try to answer your questions about who, why, how - and where we’re headed as a world city and a nation. I became a full-time guide just a year ago, so it’s all fresh material: I’m still buzzing. Before, I was a teacher of English and Drama: so I aim to fit the talk to what gets you motivated, and to spin the information into stories that engage.  Shakespeare and Dickens are specialisms; art and architecture have been special passions since my teenage years in Italy; social history and London’s diversity weave their way into everything.  I won Guide of the Year for Westminster Abbey “for interpreting the spirit of the place”: and that’s my aim, whatever the site. Both as a teacher and as a Blue Badge Guide I’ve been trained to be versatile and to think on my feet.  Change your mind half way round, I’ll find an alternative!  I’m interested in London, but also in you, whether you’re looking for an introduction or an in-depth exploration off the beaten track. Join me for the adventure!Education and Qualifications: Schools: English in London, Italian in Milan; Polish in Oxfordshire. Pembroke College, Cambridge University: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Royal Society of Arts: Certificate in Drama Teaching 2018 Projects and Specialities As well as the basic syllabus of great sites and attractions ... Churchill: Cabinet War Rooms and Blenheim Oxford (where I lived for ten years) Bath: the Roman baths and the whole eighteenth century (and Jane Austen) vibe. Spitalfields: immigration and religion Niche literary and educational tours Tours in Italian 2019: Further developments The National Gallery, British Museum and National Portrait Gallery: I am extending my range to tailor visits better to individual clients. In particular, I’ve practised tours for children and young people. Kensington Palace and Area (Kensington Square, Kensington Palace Gardens, the Holland Park area including Leighton House) Elite and Aristocratic London: St James’ and Piccadilly (This includes an adaptation specifically for American Mayfair, from Whig sympathisers – Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire – to World War II.) Jewish London: the City and East End, and Rothschild sites (including the British Museum: Rothschild and Biblical) Westminster Abbey: Religion and Science (in response to specific requests) Bankside (Drake, docks, bridges, Southwark low life and modern redevelopment) Greenwich, including guided highlights of the Maritime Museum, Queen’s House and Observatory. I have recently devised a walk in Greenwich that takes in the Old Woolwich Road, classic London boozers, and a great area used for filming, as well as a decidedly patriotic survey of our naval history, with US adaptations. Oriental Art (India, China, Japan and the Islamic World including The Silk Road) especially at the British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Hampton Court and Kensington Palace) Architecture walks (eg the City Cluster, Canary Wharf, Bankside) *************** UN BENVENUTO AI CLIENTI ITALIANI.
